# Terhia: Heroes — Grand Beasts

**v0.4 — 14 October 2026** (v0.3 26 September; v0.1–v0.2 25 September). **v0.4 lets a Novice cycle run 2–4 turns (§2.2, and the §4.6 conversion row with it) and an Adept Dependency be a moving site (§2.3), from the review handoff of 14 October 2026 (Terhia-Heroes-Review-Handoff.md, changes C14–C16), and adds register rows GB27–GB28; the four §3 entries keep their cycles and fixed sites, and no number moves.** v0.3 was dated 26 September 2026. **v0.3 adds one sentence to §2.7, tying the outcome columns to advancement (PG v0.7 §13.4–13.5; GMG v0.6 §9.1), and register row GB26; nothing else changes.** v0.2 was dated 25 September 2026. Companion to Terhia-Heroes-Players-Guide.md v0.9 (PG), Terhia-Heroes-Game-Masters-Guide.md v0.8 (GMG), and Terhia-Heroes-Cultures-and-Factions.md v0.4 (CF). **v0.2 applies the GMG v0.4 calibration-closure pass (GB23–GB25):** the avatar's pools and the one-attack-one-pool and one-pool-per-area rules; the Boss role's +2 on the avatar's Guard (body 26, limb 24, core 28) — v0.1's §2.1 row carried it on the Ward and not the Guard; the per-manifestation Master relic tied to tether progress; once per phase is once per manifestation. §3.4's numbers are updated; nothing else changes. Converted from Terhia-Grand-Beasts.md v0.2 (24 September 2026), the *Terhia: Chronicle* module. Built against Terhia-Canon.md v1.2: Part I (Moons and Calendar; Substrate and Nodes), Part VIII (Ecological Engine), XI.3 (Beast Register), Appendix D (prior Guru-tier events), R.8 (deferred workstreams). Mechanics only; no adventures. Every conversion decision that touches canon or the GMG is a GB-row in §5 for Joe's ratification. Canon is not edited by this file; neither is the PG or the GMG. **A table can play from the working readings as written.**

**Scope.** What a beast is and how a ground produces one (§1); the rules for running a beast at each tier in Heroes (§2); the node ceilings of record and four worked emergences, one per rank (§3); the tables for generating a beast and the procedure for converting any Chronicle v0.2 entry (§4); the register (§5). GMG §6 (Grand Beasts as bosses) is the rule of record for beasts in Heroes; this module carries the formula, the generation procedure, the ceilings, the entry format, and the worked entries that GMG §6.1 says are kept here. Where this file and GMG §6 differ, the GMG stands until the GB-row is ratified.

**What changed from Chronicle v0.2.** The formula, the grid, the tier table, the node rule, the frequency of tiers, the ceilings, the ethos-as-record rule, the entry designations, and the generation tables are carried over unchanged, because they are canon or read canon directly. The Chronicle's beast blocks (Rank Die d4/d6/d8, Guard 12–16, Vigor 12–26) are replaced by the GMG's Boss line by tier (§2.1). The Chronicle's tier rules — Trait / Rigidity / Exploit, Enhancement / Dependency / Disruption, Dominance / Reversal, Domain / Tether / Displacement — become the GMG's four vulnerability procedures (Pattern, Dependency, Reversal, Tether) with phases, and the Chronicle's procedural detail is kept wherever it does not contradict the GMG (§2.2–2.5). Readings by layer become Readings by class (GMG §6.4). Lines become Mobs (GMG §5). The 71-entry roll of record is reduced to four worked entries, one per rank; the other 67 stay in Chronicle v0.2 and convert on demand by §4.6. Relics follow GMG §6.6 and §7.

**Status against canon.** Canon Appendix R.8 defers a full bestiary and states the constraint: species lists are against the engine's design, because creatures are environmentally produced, not designed. This module contains no species. Every entry is one emergence, on one ground, in one phase, carrying the five XI.3 fields (base animal, biome, moon, node reading, tier) and a designation in the XI.3 form (ground, descriptor, date). Each entry is a candidate XI.3 row and is not canon until entered. Beasts from the Season 1 episodes, when entered from the episode files, take precedence over any row here that shares a ground. The reading of R.8 that permits the module is GB1; reject it and the entries stand as worked examples of the generation procedure only.

**Reading order.** §1 and §2 before the first beast scene. §3.0 for the ceiling of the ground the party is on; §3.1–3.4 for the entry the session is running. §4 when a ground needs a beast this file does not hold, or when a Chronicle entry is wanted at the Heroes table.

**Vocabulary map (Chronicle → Heroes).** Favor / Hindrance → Advantage / Disadvantage. Difficulty → DC, same numbers (13 / 16 / 19 / 22 / 26 / 30; PG §2). Stuck → Rooted, or Grabbed where something holds. A Reserve check against fear → Frightened, an attack vs Ward. Notice at a Difficulty → a Notice check (Reckoning or Attunement, PG §3) at that DC. Rank Die → the tier's RD (d6 / d8 / d10 / d12; the Chronicle's beast dice were one step lower). Circle → Burst 2–3; Ground → the map; a Line at Squad scale → a Mob squad (2×5). Surprised → the ambush round (§2.4). Move in paces → Speed in squares: Chronicle Move × ¾, rounded to an even number, 6 to 10 (flight and swimming as the entry says). Layers → the class Readings of GMG §6.4. Environmental Strain → 1 Strain (§2.5).

## 1. What a beast is

### 1.1 The formula

Creature = Base Animal × Biome × Moon × Ethos (Canon Part VIII, Creature Generation). Canon states that this is not metaphorical: the four factors shape what emerges. In play the four factors are four questions the GM answers before a beast enters a scene, and the answers fill the five XI.3 fields.

1. **Base animal.** An animal of the ground. The beast is that animal with something changed by the substrate. It eats what the animal eats, dens where the animal dens, and fears what the animal fears, except where the change says otherwise. Record it; the August 2026 audit's duplicate ("Kilnback") was a register failure, and a beast without a base animal cannot be checked against a register. In Heroes the base animal also fixes what the tier line does not: Size on the grid, Speed and movement mode (swim, fly, burrow, climb), the damage kind of its natural weapon (Physical; the sub-kind — cut, pierce, crush — only matters to relics and resistances), and how the tier's damage budget is split into attacks.
2. **Biome.** The biome of the ground (Canon Part V; nine biomes, with Coastal and Mountain as overlays on top of any biome). The biome selects a row of the grid.
3. **Moon.** The phase at emergence selects the column. The cell is the ambient effect the beast expresses or was produced by. Node activity fixes the tier ceiling: no beast above the node's reading, and no Master tier from a dormant node. The GM checks the ceiling (§3.0) before placing a fight; a Sorcerer's Reading can report it (GMG §6.1).
4. **Ethos.** Canon states that the prevailing ethos of the ground shapes what emerges and does not state how. This module expresses ethos as the record: how the ground's institution files and handles the beast. On Rationalist ground (Blue Accord) a beast is a licensed cull, a contract, an invoice. On Devout ground (Gold Crown) it is a parish entry, and a Master-tier beast is, in doctrine, an entry out of order in the Lender's account (Canon Part I, the Crown's reading). On Reverie ground (Green Chimera) it is a docket item, a closure, a hunting claim that moves with the beast's range. The beast's body is the same on any ground; the paper is not (GB3). In Heroes the paper is also the contract: the poster, the reward, and the reputation track the beast enters are GMG §8's, in the register of the ground's institution.

### 1.2 The grid

The Biome × Moon grid, ratified rows and extension together (Canon Part VIII). The pattern under it: Velquor distorts, Namaris burns or blinds, Orrivane disorients, Saelura stabilizes or heals, Threnis produces apex or dominant fauna. The cell is the beast's ambient effect and the source of its trait, dependency, arena condition, or domain; GMG §9.3 gives each cell's effect at the table as a hazard, and a beast's entry says which of those effects it carries with it.

| Biome | Velquor | Namaris | Orrivane | Saelura | Threnis |
|:--|:--|:--|:--|:--|:--|
| Forest (Deciduous, Evergreen, Taiga inherit) | Geometric growth | Fire spread | Herd agitation | Rapid healing | Apex beast emergence |
| Taiga (own row) | Bog-light; drowned ground | Crown fire | Compass drift | Sap-rise healing | Pack coordination |
| Tundra | Lake-ice anomaly; permafrost heave | Whiteout glare; false suns | Aurora hallucination | Thaw pockets stabilize | Herd-beast emergence |
| Desert | Mirages | Sandstorms | Heat delirium | Oasis stabilization | Burrow dominance |
| Tropical Rainforest | Rot acceleration | Canopy fire (rare) | Swarm disorientation | Rapid healing beyond record | Canopy predator emergence |
| Savanna | Dead-ground avoidance by herds | Grass fire | Migration reversal | Waterhole stabilization | Pride dominance |
| Grassland | Ring necrosis | Wildfire front | Herd agitation | Soil recovery | Burrow and raptor apex |
| Chaparral | Scrub die-off | Firestorm | Heat delirium | Spring resurgence | Ambush predator magnification |
| Coastal (overlay) | Tidal distortion | Storm surge | Migratory disruption | Coral recovery | Reef intelligence |
| Mountain (overlay) | Fault shifts | Avalanche | Echo hallucination | Monastic refuge | Predator magnification |

Taiga has both an inherited Forest row and its own extended row in canon; this module uses the extended row for taiga ground and notes where the Forest row was used instead.

### 1.3 Tiers

The Grand Beast Tier table (Canon Part VIII), with the Heroes procedure each column becomes (GMG §6.3; §2 below). The table is the fight's structure, not flavor.

| Tier | Power source | Vulnerability origin | Vulnerability logic | Heroes procedure (§2) | Boss Vigor | Phases |
|:--|:--|:--|:--|:--|:-:|:-:|
| Novice | Amplified natural trait | Behavioral rigidity | Pattern exploitation | **Pattern**: a fixed cycle with a tell; read it, exploit it | 60 | 2 |
| Adept | Magical enhancement | Biological dependency | Substrate disruption | **Dependency**: a site on the map; deny it and the enhancement ends | 110 | 3 |
| Master | Environmental dominance | Energy inversion | Environmental reversal | **Reversal**: the arena is the beast's; reverse the condition mid-fight for a window | 450 | 4 |
| Guru | Lunar embodiment | Geographic tether | Domain displacement | **Tether**: an avatar of parts that returns; unseat three tether points across a campaign | 800 per manifestation | Repeats |

Tier is not size and not species. A hare can be Adept and a bear Novice; the tier is the node's, the animal's is only the shape. A Guru-tier beast is not an animal at all in the way the other three are: it is the moon's signature expressed through a ground, tethered to a node, and the base-animal field is usually a dispute between records (Frostvatn: the parishes say a beast, the households say the lake mother; Canon R.5 #6, not settled).

### 1.4 The node

The substrate is more responsive at nodes, fixed loci tethered to terrain features (Canon Part I). Node activity is a reading, kept in the Firstday Watch's phase ledgers; it governs what emerges and not what a practitioner pays (decided 11 September 2026; Heroes' one moon lever, GMG §9.4, is a phase rule and not a node rule). Beast tier cannot exceed the node's reading. A dormant node sustains Novice and Adept emergence and nothing above. Readings across the map have not returned to pre-1218 baseline (Canon Part IX, The Present); every ceiling in §3.0 is the Watch's figure for Velquor 1245, and a second record disagrees with it wherever one exists. Rank of relic ≤ tier of emergence ≤ node reading (GMG §7.6): a dormant-node region has no Master relics that were not carried in.

### 1.5 Frequency

How often a tier occurs, stated as the records state it:

- **Novice.** Common. A herder's count, a fire-house tally, a harbor-master's log carries several per phase on any working ground. Most are pests, prizes, or hazards of a season; most are never filed. In Heroes a Novice beast is a Hard fight for a Novice party of four (6 TP) and an Easy one for an Adept party (2 TP): the contract a Warden's board hands to a level-3 party.
- **Adept.** Uncommon. On the order of one per settlement per year, on the Ledger's cull licences for Accord territory; the Concord's dockets carry more, because a Chimera claimant reports what a Ledger examiner would not license. A Hard fight for an Adept party; Deadly at level 5.
- **Master.** Rare. Two in the Chronicle since 1145 (Shalei 1155, Mwamba 1186), each a period's largest beast event; Chronicle v0.2's roll added two standing [N], one of which is §3.3. A Master-tier beast closes a road, empties a valley, or holds a front line; its reversal is a phase-scale operation whose last act is the fight.
- **Guru.** Five Watch entries in the calendar of record (Velquor 1027, Namaris 1062, Threnis 1091, Saelura 1118, Velquor 1230). Chronicle v0.2's roll added one rising [N], which is §3.4. A Guru-tier emergence is a campaign, not an encounter.

### 1.6 Reading a beast

A beast holds information in registers like anything else, and the partition is the point: no single class's Reading returns a beast's vulnerability together with its power, and a Grand Beast's vulnerability is complete only when two schools read it together (PG §11). Readings are free — 0 Strain, no action, once per round per reader — and the exploit costs the reader's Quick, or an Action when the Quick is spent (PG §11, R5). The GM says one sentence and no more; a Reading that fails is still a result.

**GMG §6.4 is the table:** one line per class per tier. It is not copied here, so that the two files do not drift. Its shape, by tier: at Novice the Readings between them return the cycle, the tell, and the next square; at Adept, where the enhancement sits, what the body needs, and where the site is; at Master, the condition, what reverses it, where the reversal point is, and how wide the window will be; at Guru, the tether's place, the part carrying the load, and which tether point is load-bearing — and four classes fail at Guru (Apostle returns "the Debtor"; Apothecarist, Berserker, and Warlock read nothing in an avatar), which is the partial-view rule made mechanical (GMG G8, open). Each entry in §3 lists its own *Reads as* lines in that shape; a class not listed reads what §6.4 says for the tier, or "nothing here", which is a true return.

## 2. Running beasts

### 2.1 The Boss line

A Grand Beast is a Boss (GMG §4.3, §4.4) on the tier's Boss line, with the tier's vulnerability procedure and phases on top (GMG §6). These are the defaults an entry deviates from; every entry in §3 lists its own numbers.

| Tier | Guard / Ward | Attack | Vigor | Damage budget per round | Attacks per Action (each) | Tempo | Interrupts (strike) | Size · Speed |
|:--|:-:|:-:|:-:|:-:|:--|:-:|:-:|:--|
| Novice | 16 / 15 | +4 | 60 | 16 | 2 × 6 (1d6+3) | 1 | 1 (4) | Medium or Large · 6–8 |
| Adept | 19 / 18 | +7 | 110 | 32 | 2 × 6 (1d8+2) | 2 | 1 (8) | Large · 6–8 |
| Master | 22 / 21 | +10 | 450 | 55 | 2 × 10 (2d8+1) | 2 | 2 (8) | Large or Huge · 6–8 |
| Guru | 26 body; limb 24, core 28 / 25 | +14 | 800 per manifestation | 90 | 2 × 11 (2d8+2) per part that attacks | 3 | 3 (8) | 4×4 or larger · 6, or 0 if the manifestation is the terrain |

- **Guard and Ward** are the tier's standard figures +2 for the Boss role (GMG §4.2, §4.3). The Guru avatar's body is 26 like every Boss body — the tier's 24 plus the role's +2 — a limb 24, a core 28 (GMG §6.5). v0.1 had 24 / 22 / 26, the one Boss line whose Ward carried the +2 while its Guard did not; the GMG's floor check is where it showed (GMG §12.3 c; GB24).
- **The damage budget** is the GMG tier table's Boss figure and includes the Interrupts: Bosses make two attacks per Action, and the per-round figure is attacks × Actions + Interrupts × the tier's Interrupt strike (GMG §4.2). Dice are optional; the flat figure is the calibration. An entry may spend part of the budget on an ability instead of attacks (a roar, a drag, a burst), and says so.
- **Tempo and Interrupts** are GMG §3.2 and §6.3: beast Tempo Novice 1 · Adept 2 · Master 2 · Guru 3; Interrupts 1 / 1 / 2 / 3. A beast's Interrupts are its own — a lash, a step, a call — and are listed on the entry. They refresh at the start of the beast's turn; a Stunned Boss loses them until its next turn (GMG §10.4).
- **Shake-off, hex cap 3, Weakness, half-on-miss:** as every Boss (GMG §4.4). A beast's listed Weakness is its tier's vulnerability logic.
- **No Strain, no Marks.** A beast's power is paid for by the ground (its trait, its dependency, its arena, its domain), not by its body, and the tier's vulnerability procedure is where the bill is presented. A beast never Pushes.
- **The base animal sets the rest.** Size (a lynx is Medium; a tiger Large; a python of no recorded size Huge), Speed and mode, the natural weapon's sub-kind, and which of its Actions are attacks. Nothing about the animal changes the line's Vigor or Guard: a Novice hare and a Novice ox are both Vigor 60, and the ox is Large.
- **Two or more beasts of one entry** act on one Initiative. A second beast of the same entry in one fight is a second Boss for the budget (GMG §4.6).

### 2.2 Novice — Pattern

*Power: an amplified natural trait. Vulnerability: behavioral rigidity. Logic: pattern exploitation.*

- **Trait.** One natural trait raised past the animal's range — speed, concealment, endurance, a bite, a display, footing, a coat — written as a Boss ability or a passive on the block. It is always on. It is what the big turn of the cycle does.
- **Pattern.** The beast runs a fixed **cycle of 2–4 turns** (3 is the default: stalk → charge → recover, or the entry's own) with a **tell** the turn before its big attack (GMG §6.3). The cycle is the Rigidity: one thing the beast cannot vary — a route, an hour, a target, a return, a refusal — and the entry names it. It is an animal's, not a flaw designed in.
- **Reading it.** The pattern is *read* when any of these is true: a Reading returns it (any class; the Hexblade's returns the tell a turn early); the party has watched two full cycles; or a record in the party's hands states it — a herder's count, a fire-house tally, a hunter's habit (GB5). Once read, the **exploit** is on: on the recover turn, attacks against the beast have Advantage and its Guard is −4. A Novice beast whose pattern is not read is fought on its Boss line, and a party that fights it that way spends its Vigor to learn nothing.
- **The hunt's end.** Each entry lists one way the pattern ends the emergence without a kill — the Rigidity used against the animal, at a listed cost in time or work. It counts as the vulnerability logic executed for the outcome line (§2.7): the Trait's material is left, and the animal goes back to being one. A hunt: the party's first job is to watch.
- **Phase 2** (half Vigor): the cycle changes — its order, or its length within 2–4 — and a new tell must be read; the map changes with it (the entry says how); one new ability; one new Reading line. Damage carries over.

### 2.3 Adept — Dependency

*Power: magical enhancement. Vulnerability: biological dependency. Logic: substrate disruption.*

- **Enhancement.** While the Dependency stands the beast has **one resistance and one ability** beyond any animal's range (GMG §6.3), stated as a Boss ability at the scale an Adept technique would have (one target, or Burst 2–3). It is always on while the Dependency stands.
- **Dependency.** One thing on the ground the enhancement draws on: a den-site whose reading is off, a spring, a stand of trees, a carcass ground, a lick, a roost, a crust. The beast returns to it; the animal in it needs it. On the map it is a **site** — a square or a 2×2, with a 30-Vigor object at it (a root-mouth, a den wall, a crust, a nest) — and the entry says where. The Dependency is *found* by the Readings the entry names (the Apothecarist names the biological dependency; the Elementalist which element it needs; the Warden its den and route; the Paladin the site's break threshold; GMG §6.4), or by a record that already holds it. Finding the beast is not finding the Dependency.
- **A moving site.** Where the dependency is a thing that moves — a herd the animal follows, a tide-line, a carcass it drags, a roost that shifts with the wind — the site is the square or block it occupies at the start of each round, and the entry says how it moves (a Mob's Speed; one square a round with the tide). The object is the thing itself: a Mob's Cohesion (§2.6), or a lead animal's Vigor, in place of the 30-Vigor object. The check route — two Actions adjacent to it and DC 16 — stands wherever it is (scatter the herd, cut the carcass loose), so a party is never required to break a Mob to deny a Dependency. Phase 2 sends the beast to wherever the site is now.
- **Deny it.** Two Actions at the site and a check vs **DC 16** (any attribute the fiction supports: Frame to tear a root-mouth, Attunement to turn a spring, Reckoning to channel it), or breaking the 30-Vigor object there (GMG §6.3). Denied, the resistance and the ability end for the rest of the fight. A Disruption executed while the beast is present is executed under attack. **Denied before the fight** — downtime work at the site over the time the entry states (a day's digging, a felled stand, a cut sandbar), or a legal act on Chimera ground that moves people off it — the beast is met without them from the first round; it still goes to the site at half Vigor, because it does not know (GB6).
- **Phase 2** (half Vigor): the beast moves to the Dependency and fights at it; the entry gives it something at the site (a regeneration, an ambush, the numbers) that also ends when the site is denied. **Phase 3** (quarter Vigor): damage ×1.25, Speed +2, no more Interrupts — it has stopped thinking. It does not know that its enhancement has ended until it uses it.

### 2.4 Master — Reversal

*Power: environmental dominance. Vulnerability: energy inversion. Logic: environmental reversal.*

- **The arena is the beast's.** Its ground expresses the cell at strength wherever the beast is: an environmental condition (fog, flooded ground, heat, ice, dark, cover, smoke, sand) that grants it **+1 Interrupt** and **one resistance** and puts a **hazard on the party** (GMG §6.3), listed on the entry as standing conditions on everyone on the map. Where the cell is an ambush (chaparral × Threnis, predator magnification), the arena includes the **ambush round**: in the first round of any engagement on its ground the beast acts first, from Hidden, whatever the Initiative — the Warden's *The Unclosing Eye* excepted (GB7). A Master beast in its arena cannot be killed by a party of its rank in the rounds its Vigor allows, and is not meant to be; it can be fought by attrition only at the cost §2.6 gives.
- **Energy inversion.** The condition draws on the cell. When the cell turns — the phase changes, the fuel is gone, the water comes back — the draw reverses and the beast is at its weakest. The entry states the inversion as a condition of the map and names the **kind** the beast is Vulnerable to in it; it is the kind the arena's resistance was.
- **Reversal.** The party must **reverse the condition mid-fight**: a map task of **3 steps in Phase 1, 2 in Phase 2, 1 in Phase 3** — each step an Action at a point on the map plus a check vs **DC 18**, or a structure break (GMG §6.3, §10.8). Completing the task opens a **window of 2 rounds**: Guard −4, Vulnerable to the named kind, no Interrupts, and no concealment the arena gave. Each phase the beast re-asserts the condition and changes the map (water rises, a ridge falls, the fog thickens, the scrub closes), and the next task is shorter. **Phase 4** (quarter Vigor) has no reversal: the window is permanent and its damage is ×1.25.
- **The operation and its last act.** The Chronicle's phase-scale operation — a counter-burn across a hill, an oasis collapsed, a waterhole raised a mile away, burn rights lent under fire law — is what puts the steps on the map: it is prepared in play, priced in labor-days, in contracts, in the Concord's docket, or in a Guru's Marks, and the fight is its last act (GB8). The Reversal is *identified* by the Readings the entry names (Elementalist: the condition and what reverses it; Necromancer: where the arena's deaths cluster; Artificer: the mechanism; Paladin: the structure to break; GMG §6.4), by a Join, or by a record: the Shalei hunters of 1156 had the oasis from three caravan ledgers, not from a Reading.
- **Left on its ground.** A Master beast does not leave its ground; it dies there or the party does. A party that leaves (GMG §4.7, the leaving procedure) finds it at full Vigor and in Phase 1 at the next phase turn, because the ground restores it; inside a phase it keeps its wounds (GB9).

### 2.5 Guru — Tether

*Power: lunar embodiment. Vulnerability: geographic tether. Logic: domain displacement.*

- **Domain.** A Ground (a valley, a lake basin, a forest reach, a harbor approach) that expresses the cell at full strength for as long as the embodiment stands. The entry lists the Domain's effects at Ground scale as standing conditions. Three apply in every Domain (GB10): a Novice of the moon's own school pays **1 Strain** at the start of each turn in which it Reads inside the Domain, because the register is louder than the reader; every Reading of that school inside the Domain returns **two sentences** instead of one, the second precise; and lesser emergences inside a Domain are **one tier above their entry, to Master**, whatever the homeland's ceiling says elsewhere — the Domain is the reading.
- **The avatar.** A Guru tier is not fought to a kill. If it presents a body — the parishes at Frostvatn said it did — that body is the **avatar**: 4×4 or larger, Speed 6 or 0 if the manifestation is the terrain, Vigor 800 per manifestation, Tempo 3, Interrupts 3, built of **3–5 parts**, each with its own Guard (body 26, the Boss line's; a limb 24; a core 28), its 800 divided into **parts + 1 equal pools** — one per part and one **last pool**, which is not a target until every part is destroyed and is then attacked at the body's Guard (GMG §6.5). Damage to a part is damage to the avatar. **One attack, one pool:** each attack, extra Strike, and Interrupt-provoked strike damages the pool it targets; damage past a pool's 0 is lost; a destroyed part cannot be targeted again; a chain chooses a pool per attack. **An area, or any one-roll attack against several targets, damages one pool** — the attacker's choice among the parts it covers — and applies its hex or rider to each part it covers. Destroying a part removes one listed ability and grants a Reading of the tether to whoever destroyed it, and carries nothing into any other pool (GB23). It can be climbed (DC 20 with a Move; attacks on the part stood on have Advantage; attacked only by Interrupts), blinded per part, and moved 1 pace per 50 damage by a Ground-scale Force or Storm effect. **Manifestation destroyed** at 0 Vigor: it dissolves for the phase and **returns at the next phase of its moon** (or the next Firstday, on the GM's clock) at full, minus parts permanently removed. Killing the body is a record of a body killed and nothing else. This is the rule for "could not be killed" (Canon Part I). **Once per phase is once per manifestation:** the Boss Stun (GMG §10.4) and the Weakness exploit (GMG §4.4) each land once while the avatar stands.
- **Tether.** A location: the node anchor by which the embodiment holds the Ground — a basin, a range, a reef, an oasis, a river bend. It is what a Sorcerer's Guru-grade Reading returns as the two editable values; it is what a keeper's closure holds empty; it is the headwater the Iselva diversion cut. It is never the beast's body.
- **Tether points.** Unseating the tether is a **campaign objective**, not a fight: **three tether points** on a regional map, each unseated by a Guru-scale action — a Guru ability at Ground scale, a season's engineering work, a joint operation, a treaty that moves people (GMG §6.3). Each point unseated removes one part permanently from the next manifestation and one ability with it. The two methods in the record are both here: *engineering* (Accord, Frostvatn 1230–32: divert a headwater, cut a seawall, dry a basin) and *closure* (Chimera, Marama 1091: a keeper's closure held empty across two phase turns and renewed at each; the Watch records the reading fallen and does not know why). **The third point is always the last, and it is always a Join at DC 30** at the anchor (PG §2, "beyond one hand"; GMG §10.3): two schools, each on its own register of the anchor — Structure and Element for an engineering displacement; Life and Structure, or Life and Boundary, for a closure. All three unseated: the Domain collapses with the avatar (Frostvatn, Velquor 1232). Nothing else displaces a Guru tier; damage does not, and no single school does (GB11).

### 2.6 Numbers, calibration, and attrition

- **Herds, packs, swarms, colonies.** Where the base animal comes in numbers, the entry runs them as a **Mob** (GMG §5) in a sliding block (animals reshape freely and ignore the gap rule), at the unit the count gives — band 5, squad 10, platoon 40 — and at the **drill of the beast's tier** (Novice tier, Novice drill; Adept, Adept; Master, Master), Cohesion 6 / 9 / 12 per member (GB12). Where a lead animal exists (a sow, a bull, a pack leader, the old male), it is the Boss on the tier's Boss line and the numbers are its Mob: the Ulvskov pack of GMG §11.4 is the model. Where there is no leader (a swarm, a colony's soldiers, a roost), the Mob is the whole beast, the tier's procedure applies to it — its Dependency denied removes the drill's Cohesion bonus and one listed ability — and it breaks at 0 Cohesion into nothing worth counting. Areas and DoTs deal double to Cohesion (GMG §5.4), which is what a caster is for against a swarm.
- **Threat Points.** A beast is a Boss: **6 TP** at its tier (GMG §4.6); its Mob adds the unit's TP (band 2, squad 4, platoon 10). Cross-tier as the GMG: ÷3 one tier down, ×3 one tier up, and **two tiers or more above is not a stand-up fight** — the GM says the tier out loud when the first Reading lands, and the leaving procedure (GMG §4.7) is the scene. Within a tier, a level-5 or level-9 party is at the bottom of its band: treat Hard as Deadly.
- **Attrition.** A Novice beast can be killed on its line without its pattern read; an Adept beast without its Dependency denied; a Master beast — 450 Vigor, a resistance, three Interrupts, the arena's hazard every round — only by a party that accepts a fight of ten rounds or more with no window. Each is legal, and each leaves less (§2.7). A Guru avatar destroyed by attrition returns.
- **Stunned.** A Boss, once per phase; a second Stun in the same phase is Slowed (GMG §10.4). *Time Debt* once per encounter.

### 2.7 What an emergence leaves

A relic (PG §15.2; GMG §7). The tier's outcome line is where it comes from, and how the beast was beaten is what makes it separable from the body (GMG §6.6):

| Tier | Outcome line | Leaves, if the vulnerability logic was executed | Leaves, if killed by attrition alone |
|:--|:--|:--|:--|
| Novice | **Trait** | 1 Novice relic (Rigidity governor) — the pattern exploited or the hunt ended by it | Nothing usable; a hide |
| Adept | **Dependency** | 1 Adept relic (Dependency governor), from the site, which is still there after the beast is an animal again, + 1 Novice relic | 1 Novice relic |
| Master | **Dominance** | 1 Master relic (Inversion governor) + 1 Adept relic; the arena's condition ends for a season | 1 Adept relic; the condition persists |
| Guru | **Tether** | 1 named Guru relic (Tether governor) + 2 Master relics at domain collapse; the node reading falls one step | The first manifestation destroyed leaves 1 Master relic; a later one leaves a Master relic only if a tether point has been unseated since the last relic left; the avatar returns (GB25) |

**Advancement.** Executing the vulnerability logic is what the advancement rules count as a structural resolution: 2 Proofs for the party (attrition alone, 1), and the rank gate for a party whose current rank is the beast's tier (PG §13.4–13.5; GMG §9.1). A beast above the party's tier opens the gate too.

The relic's attribute is taken from the GMG §7.5 catalogue at the tier's magnitude, from the beast's own line — its trait, enhancement, dominance, or tether — and its moon is the emergence's. Entries in §3 carry one suggested relic each in the GMG §7.9 form; the GM writes the rest from the entry when the outcome line is reached. The GM never rolls for relics; the outcome line is the roll. The registry consequences are GMG §7.8: Accord residue is declared cargo; Velquor-line relics are contraband on Crown ground; a Threnis relic on Chimera ground belongs to the ground.

### 2.8 Records

Every count a beast entry carries names its counter (Canon Discipline 5). The parish counts what it tithes, the Ledger what it licenses, the Concord what a claimant reports, a caravan house what it lost. Two records of one beast disagree, and both are handed out as the scene puts them in reach. A beast's date is the date of the record, not of the emergence; the Watch's phase entry is a reading, not a sighting. In Heroes the record is also a route to the vulnerability (§2.2, §2.4): a party that reads the paper before it reads the beast has done the first job.

### 2.9 Entry format

Each entry gives, in order: **designation** (ground, descriptor, phase and year of record) — tier · base animal · biome × moon: the cell · node reading (record) · ground's institution. Then *Ecology* (what the cell changed, range, season, sign); *Boss block* (GMG §4.1: Size, Speed, Tempo, Guard / Ward, Vigor, attack, attacks, abilities, resist / vulnerable, Interrupts, Weakness); the tier's procedure lines (Pattern · tell · exploit · hunt's end; Dependency · deny; Arena · inversion · reversal; Domain · avatar · tether · tether points); *Phases* (GMG §6.2); *Reads as* (one line per class that plausibly reads it); *Outcome line* (what it leaves, with one relic written); *Records*. The designation is the XI.3 name field; nothing in it is a coined word.

## 3. The ceilings, and four emergences

### 3.0 Ceilings of record

The Firstday Watch's phase ledger, Velquor 1245, one figure per homeland, with the ground that carries it and the record that disagrees. All twelve are [N] (GB4). Frostvatn's basin is not read here: it is reserved to the episodes (Canon XI.5, item 17). The ceiling is step 3 of the formula: nothing on the ground emerges above it, and a Sorcerer's Reading reports it.

| Homeland | Ceiling (Watch, Velquor 1245) | Ground at the ceiling | Second record |
|:--|:-:|:--|:--|
| Isavík | Master | The northern valleys under the Hrafnrygg, excluding the Frostvatn basin | The parishes read the valleys as quiet since 1232 and file no beast above Adept; the households do not file |
| Grimskov | Adept | Ulvskov timber stands; the Svarthavet coast at Stenhavn | The Stenhavn moot's tide log says the coast reads higher than the Watch's instrument |
| Zhenshui | Adept | The Lianshui reaches above Baishui; the Songlin pine stands | The Ledger's cull licences for 1244 list nothing above Adept and take that as the reading |
| Tienling | Master | The Shalei Desert (Master-active 1155) | Three caravan houses at Shakou keep a road-closure tally instead and call the desert "open" |
| Zulwazi | Master | The Kwazira highland and the Mwamba foothills (highest reading then on record, Threnis 1186) | The Concord's Threnis 1244 docket carries a Kwazira closure; the Concord records the closure and no reading |
| Oasira | Adept | The Tinwara circuit; the Azelra wells | The Azelra keeper lineages say the wells read whatever the well remembers, and do not say what that is |
| Koremu | Master | Lake Marama and the forest above it (Threnis 1091); the Rangitahu fire country | The keepers closed the Watch's observer out of Marama in 1091; the Watch's Marama figure is the observer's from the road |
| Awanui | Master, rising | Puketai (reef at full expression since 1224); the Waimotu reach (rising at the Threnis 1244 turn) | The Puketai pilots' word is that the harbor reads as it should; the Waimotu council posted closure and gave no figure |
| Yaxkulu | Adept | The Witzmul forest hill; the Sakbeha causeway margins | Ash-and-Antler's warding assessment reads the wards it holds and not the Kinha wells |
| Teocalli | Adept | The Tepemitla forest hill; the Xalcoyan scrub | The precincts file the hill as the Lender's ground and read no node on it at all |
| Bahr-Al-Asra | Adept | The Bab-Al-Ghaf forest; the Bahr Sufra where it leaves the citadel | The arbiter-judges' bite roll for the road is the citadel's only count |
| Zand-Kala | Novice (dormant) | The garden country reads below Adept everywhere the Watch has read it | The garden councils' stock ledgers list losses the Watch's figure cannot account for |

**The four entries.** One per rank, taken from the Chronicle v0.2 roll of record (seed 1245) and converted by §4.6: a Novice on Devout ground, an Adept on Rationalist ground, a Master and a Guru on Reverie ground. Each is a candidate XI.3 row; none is entered. The remaining 67 entries of the roll stay in Chronicle v0.2 (GB13).

### 3.1 Novice — Skarfell bog-lynx, Velquor 1244

**Skarfell bog-lynx, Velquor 1244** — Novice · lynx · Taiga × Velquor: bog-light, drowned ground · node Adept-active, the ridge (Watch) · Devout ground (Isavík; Menneske; Gold Crown).

*Ecology.* The Velquor bog-lights on the ridge's low ground came up along the drowned trails, and the lynx hunts along them; it has taken dogs from the fire-house's sledge teams four winters running. Sign: lights in a line at dusk, and a lynx's prints that never break the crust.

*Boss block.* Medium · Speed 8 (drowned ground and bog cost it nothing) · Tempo 1 · Guard 16 / Ward 15 · Vigor 60 · attack +4 · two bites per Action, 1d6+3 Physical each · Interrupt 1: a rake, 4, at the end of any creature's turn that ends adjacent to it. Resist: none. Weakness: the pattern (Hexblade's *Read the Seam* returns the tell a turn early).

*Trait — never breaks the crust.* The lynx ignores difficult terrain and every terrain hazard on the ridge, is never Rooted or Prone by ground, and is **Hidden** while it is in a lit square at least 2 squares from every enemy (Notice DC 18 to find its square). **The map:** a lit line of bog-lights, 30 squares long, along a drowned trail. Every square on the line and every square adjacent to it is *drowned ground* for everyone else: difficult terrain, and a creature that ends its turn on it checks Frame DC 13 or is Rooted until it spends a Move to pull free (the Chronicle's Stuck; GB14).

*Pattern.* A 3-turn cycle. **(1) Along the lights** — it Moves up to 16 along the line and ends Hidden in a lit square; no attacks; its Interrupt is available. **(2) The take** — it comes out of the light: Move 8 and two bites with Advantage from Hidden; it ends the turn on the line. **(3) Turn back** — it Moves back toward the last light it came from and does not attack; if the pattern has been read, its Guard is 12 this turn and attacks against it have Advantage. *Tell:* the turn before the take, the three lights nearest the party go out. *Rigidity:* it hunts only along the line and turns back where the lights end; it will not enter or cross a **staked square**. Read by any Reading, by two full cycles watched, or by the fire-house's tally in the party's hands, which states the line and the dogs.

*Exploit.* On the turn-back turn, Advantage and Guard −4. **A stake:** a Quick Action with a stake in hand (the fire-house keeps them; any Frame check DC 10 cuts one) plants it in an adjacent lit square. The lynx will not cross a stake: if a stake stands between it and every target on its line, its next turn is *Turn back*, wherever it is in the cycle.

*Hunt's end.* The Skarfell hunters' habit: walk the lit line before dusk and stake both ends — an hour's work and a Notice check DC 13 to find each end of the line in daylight. Staked at both ends, the lynx is held to a stretch of line with no dogs on it, and leaves the ridge at the Velquor turn with the lights. The fire-house calls this wood-luck; the parish sacrist who lives in the same longhouse calls it nothing (Canon Part VII, Skoglind). The outcome line is reached; nothing is killed.

*Phases.*
```
PHASE 2 — Trigger: Vigor 30
Change: a second lit line comes up along a second drowned trail, crossing the first; every square adjacent to a lit square is drowned ground at the end of each round. The cycle changes: (1) The take — from wherever it is, no stalk first; (2) Turn back; (3) Along the lights. New tell: the light it will come out of flares the turn before, instead of going out.
New ability: Drag to the drowned — a bite that hits pulls the target 2 squares along the line onto drowned ground (Frame DC 13 or Rooted).
New Reading: Warden — the stake it will not cross; Elementalist — which light is the ground's and which the lynx now carries.
Interrupts this phase: 1
```

*Reads as.* Sorcerer: its mass and its charge line, which is the lit line. Elementalist: the lights are the ground's, not a fire's; where the drowned ground is. Apostle: its agitation — it flees where the lights end. Necromancer: dogs, recent, several, along the line. Warden: its next square, which is the next light. Hexblade: the tell, one turn early. Vanguard: its charge lane is the line and nothing else. Paladin: the crust holds it and not you. Artificer: Speed 8 where yours on the bog is 3. Warlock: a dog-bait dose would drop it; the fire-house has the bait.

*Outcome line.* Trait. Hunt ended or pattern exploited: 1 Novice relic — **Skarfell crust-print (Novice)** · Origin: Skarfell bog-lynx, Velquor 1244 · Isavík · Novice · Velquor · Line: Trait · *Attribute:* Guard +1 · *Governor:* Rigidity — on a turn you did not Move · Seats in any socket; Bond none. Killed on its line with nothing read: a hide. On Crown ground the print is Velquor-line residue and contraband in Chancel territory (GMG §7.8).

*Records.* The fire-house tally: four dogs, four winters. The parish: no entry.

*Budget.* 6 TP at Novice: Hard for four Novices at levels 3–4; not for levels 1–2, which use the Easy and Standard rows only (GMG §4.6, D2). 2 TP for an Adept party.

### 3.2 Adept — Songlin tiger, Threnis 1244

**Songlin tiger, Threnis 1244** — Adept · tiger · Evergreen × Threnis: apex beast emergence · node Adept-active (Watch) · Rationalist ground (Zhenshui; Renlei; Blue Accord).

*Ecology.* A tiger in the deep pine north of the town that drinks at one spring before every hunt and has killed four of the board's certified hunters in a phase. Sign: a spring with a worn path to it from every direction but one, and silence in the pines an hour before dusk.

*Boss block.* Large 2×2 · Speed 8 · Tempo 2 · Guard 19 / Ward 18 · Vigor 110 · attack +7 · two attacks per Action, bite or claw, 1d8+2 Physical each · Interrupt 1: a swipe, 8, at the end of any creature's turn that ends adjacent to it. Weakness: the Dependency (Apothecarist's *Read the Living* names it).

*Enhancement — while the spring stands.* **Resist Physical** (the apex's hide). **Roar** · Control · Action · Burst 3 centred on the tiger, one roll vs each Ward · hit: Frightened 2 rounds. At Tempo 2 it roars and attacks in one turn; a Frightened party cannot close on it, and the tiger chooses who is close.

*Dependency.* The spring, which reads Threnis-active in the pine root: a square 12 squares upslope of where the tiger is met, with a **root-mouth** at it (30 Vigor; timber: Fire deals full, a Paladin's Strike double). *Found* by *Read the Living* on the tiger or on a kill (what it needs: the spring, before the hunt), by *Read the Answer* at the pines (water answers in the roots and will not stop), or by the board's return, which lists the spring the hunters were found below. **Deny it:** two Actions at the spring and a check vs DC 16 (Frame to tear the root-mouth; Attunement to turn the water; Reckoning to channel it downslope), or break the root-mouth. Denied: no Resist Physical, no *Roar*, no Regenerating (Phase 2), for the rest of the fight. **Before the fight:** dig it out and channel it downslope, two days with picks under the pines — the board licensed the digging at Threnis price and no crew took it — or an Elementalist's Stone work at the root, three checks vs DC 16 across a Breather.

*Phases.*
```
PHASE 2 — Trigger: Vigor 55
Change: the tiger goes to the spring and fights at it. Squares within 2 of the spring are root-bound: difficult terrain. At the spring, while it stands, the tiger is Regenerating 4.
New ability: From the pines (Interrupt) — when a creature ends its turn within 2 of the spring, one attack with Advantage at the Interrupt figure, 8.
New Reading: Apothecarist — the spring's water is in its blood; that is where the dependency sits. Paladin — the root-mouth's break threshold, 15.
Interrupts this phase: 1
PHASE 3 — Trigger: Vigor 27
Change: damage ×1.25 (attacks 1d8+3, 8 each); Speed 10; no Interrupts — it has stopped thinking. It fights wherever the party is, spring or no spring.
New ability: none
New Reading: Berserker — it no longer registers wounds.
Interrupts this phase: 0
```

*Reads as.* Sorcerer: where the enhancement sits — the load path runs from the spring, in its blood. Elementalist: which element its dependency needs — water, in the pine root, answering Threnis. Apostle: what it protects — the spring, as a want, before the hunt. Apothecarist: the biological dependency, named — it drinks before every hunt. Necromancer: what it feeds on, by its dead — four hunters, this phase, each from the front. Warden: its den and route — the one path to the spring with no worn track is its. Hexblade: when it draws on the enhancement — a breath before the roar. Vanguard: the ground it holds — the spring's clearing. Paladin: the root-mouth's break threshold. Berserker: what draws it off the dependency — a loud kill in the open. Warlock: its diet, as a dose — it drinks; a Toxin in the spring reaches it, and Resist Physical is not Resist Toxin.

*Outcome line.* Dependency. Denied, then killed: 1 Adept relic — **Songlin spring-stone (Adept)** · Origin: Songlin tiger, Threnis 1244 · Zhenshui · Adept · Threnis · Line: Dependency · *Attribute:* Vigor +10 · *Governor:* Dependency — a Breather a day in contact with running water, or it goes dormant · Seats in any Adept+ socket, or the Trinket · Bond none — and 1 Novice relic, **Songlin tooth (Novice)** · Damage +1 Physical on Strike · Rigidity — against a target that Moved this round. Killed with the spring intact: the tooth only. On Accord ground both are declared cargo under the Manifest Rule (GMG §7.8); the board will want the bone.

*Records.* The Songlin board's return: four hunters' families paid from the licence fund; the town's count: four, and the price of tiger bone, which the board does not record.

*Budget.* 6 TP at Adept: Hard for four Adepts; Deadly at level 5. 2 TP for a Master party; 18 TP for a Novice party, which is not a fight — the board does not post it to Novices, and the town's count says why.

### 3.3 Master — Kwazira scrub-python, Threnis 1243

**Kwazira scrub-python, Threnis 1243** — Master · rock python · Chaparral (Mountain overlay) × Threnis: ambush predator magnification; predator magnification · node Master-active, the highland (Watch) · Reverie ground (Zulwazi; Umutu; Green Chimera).

*Ecology.* A python of a size the highland has no record of, in the scrub above the town, that has made the whole highland its ambush ground. Since Threnis 1243 nothing on the highland is seen before it strikes; the Kwazira lineage closed the ground in Saelura 1244 and the closure has been renewed twice. It takes goats, dogs, and people at the rate of one a phase and has not been seen in the open. Sign: a highland with no birdsong, scrub that lies flat in a line a hand wide and thirty paces long, and cattle that will not go up.

*Boss block.* Huge 3×3 · Speed 6 (8 through scrub, which costs it nothing) · Tempo 2 · Guard 22 / Ward 21 · Vigor 450 · attack +10 · two bites per Action, 2d8+1 Physical (crush) each · Interrupts 2 by tier, **3 while the scrub stands** (a bite at 8; a Move of 3 through scrub; *From the scrub*, below). Being two size categories above a Medium creature, it enters their squares (PG §6.1). Weakness: the Reversal (Elementalist's *Read the Answer* returns the condition and what reverses it).

*Abilities.* **Constrict** · rider · a bite that hits a Medium or smaller creature Grabs it (Rooted; the python moves it when it moves; escape: an Action, Frame or Poise vs Guard 22); it holds one creature at a time, and its bites against the creature it holds have Advantage. **Squeeze** · Action · the creature it holds takes 4d8+2 crush, no roll. **From the scrub** · Interrupt · at the end of any creature's turn, if the python is Hidden: Move 3 through scrub and one bite at the Interrupt figure, 8, with Advantage; it stays Hidden if it ends in a scrub square not adjacent to an enemy.

*Arena — the highland's cover.* The scrub is the python's. While it stands: the python is **Hidden** in any scrub square not adjacent to an enemy (Notice DC 20 to find its square); **Resist Physical** (blade and arrow lose their force in the scrub; GB7); **+1 Interrupt**; the **ambush round** — in the first round of any engagement on the highland it acts first, from Hidden, whatever the Initiative, the Warden's *The Unclosing Eye* excepted. *Hazard on the party:* scrub is difficult terrain for everyone but the python; a creature that ends its turn in scrub with no ally adjacent checks Poise DC 15 or is **Exposed** until the start of its next turn (the scrub is cover for the python and for nothing else).

*Energy inversion.* Its dominance is the scrub's cover, magnified. Burn the cover and the highland is bare rock and a large snake in the open: **Vulnerable Physical**, no Hidden, no ambush. Namaris is the phase in which the chaparral's cell is firestorm; Saelura's is spring resurgence, when the scrub comes back thickest; the python feels the turn and moves toward the town when the wind rises.

*Reversal — the burn.* Prepared in play: Zulwazi lineages do not hold burn rights; the Rangitahu lineages of Koremu do, and lend them, never sell them; the lending is a Concord item, the smoke over Zulwazi grazing is the Concord's perennial item, now on the other side of the table, and the drove-line lineages downwind object (GB15). With the rights lent, the Rangitahu burners lay three **ignition points** across the highland's scrub — the west sector, the crest, the town's edge — each a kindling stack: a 15-Vigor structure, break 10, and any Fire damage of 5 or more lights it. *In the fight:* each step is an Action at a point plus a check vs DC 18 (Attunement for an Elementalist's own fire; Reckoning to lay the line; Frame to cut the break) or the stack lit by Fire. When all three are lit the wind takes the burn across the highland over the round: **window**, 2 rounds — Guard 18, Vulnerable Physical, no Interrupts, not Hidden; burning squares are fire hazards (Burning 1 on entering or ending a turn there). The party holds the fire line against the wind while the python, which feels the inversion, comes out. *Identified* by *Read the Answer* at Master grade (the fire lines the highland would take, and the wind's next turn), by *Read the Living* (the python needs the scrub; the scrub's health is its own), by the Join of the two, or by the Tinwara returns, which the lineage's speaker can read for what the hides say.

*Phases.*
```
PHASE 2 — Trigger: Vigor 337
Change: the wind drops and the burn dies at the crest. The west sector is ash: open ground, no cover for anyone. The crest and the town's edge close thicker — 3 per square for the party — and the python is Hidden in them again. The burners relay the two remaining points; they stand at the start of the phase. Reversal: 2 steps.
New ability: Coil across the line (Interrupt) — when a creature ends its turn adjacent to an ignition point, the python Moves 3 and lies across it: the point cannot be lit until it moves.
New Reading: Necromancer — the crest is where the highland's deaths cluster: the reversal point. Warden — the condition flows from the crest, upwind.
Interrupts this phase: 3 (0 while the window is open)
PHASE 3 — Trigger: Vigor 225
Change: the python holds the last cover at the town's edge. One point remains, in the goat pens; lighting it burns the pens, and the Concord's docket will carry that. Every Interrupt it has targets whoever approaches the point. Reversal: 1 step.
New ability: none
New Reading: Hexblade — the seam: the window is two rounds wide, and this is the last one. Vanguard — the corridor to the point is the goat track, and the python has it.
Interrupts this phase: 3
PHASE 4 — Trigger: Vigor 112
Change: no reversal. The highland is bare rock and ash; the window is permanent — Guard 18, Vulnerable Physical, no Interrupts, no Hidden; damage ×1.25 (bites 2d8+3, 12 each; Squeeze 4d8+6). It fights at the town's edge, because the town is the last cover, and it makes for the houses.
New ability: none
New Reading: Berserker — its fear, timed: it is afraid now.
Interrupts this phase: 0
```

*Reads as.* Sorcerer: the arena's held variable, as a quantity — the scrub's cover, as a fuel load, three sectors. Elementalist: the condition is cover; fire reverses it, with the wind from the west after noon. Apostle: it knows the inversion is coming; it moves toward the town when the wind rises. Apothecarist: its channels — the coil; the dominance drains the heat it takes from the scrub. Necromancer: one a phase, five phases, each on the crest. Warden: where the condition flows from — the crest, upwind. Hexblade: the seam — the window is two rounds wide. Vanguard: the corridor to the reversal point — the goat track to the crest. Paladin: the structure to break — the kindling stacks: 15 Vigor, break 10. Berserker: the timing of its fear — when the crest burns. Artificer: the mechanism — wind, fuel, three ignition points. Warlock: what sickens it during the inversion — smoke; a Toxin dose lands on its Ward at −2 while it is in the open.

*Outcome line.* Dominance. Reversed, then killed: 1 Master relic — **Kwazira coil-scale (Master)** · Origin: Kwazira scrub-python, Threnis 1243 · Zulwazi · Master · Threnis · Line: Dominance · *Attribute:* Resistance, Physical (half) · *Alteration:* **From cover** — once per Breather, as a Reaction, when a creature ends its Move adjacent to you while you are Hidden: one Strike with Advantage, and you stay Hidden if the target is Downed · *Governor:* Inversion — in the open (no cover within 2 squares of you), Vulnerable Physical for the scene, and the alteration is unavailable · Seats in a Master or Guru socket, or the Trinket (1 Strain Capacity while seated over-rank) · Bond none — and 1 Adept relic, written by the GM from the scrub. The Kwazira closure lifts for a season. Killed by attrition with the scrub standing: the Adept relic only, and the highland stays an ambush ground; the closure stands. On Chimera ground a Threnis relic belongs to the ground; the Kwazira speaker decides who carries it, and nothing is written (GMG §7.8).

*Records.* The Concord docket: the Kwazira closure, Saelura 1244, renewed Orrivane and Namaris, lapsing at the Threnis turn unless renewed; the lending of burn rights, proposed by the Kwazira speaker, objected to by the drove-line lineages downwind, deferred. The Tinwara returns: Kwazira hides absent two phases running, cause not recorded. The Watch: the highland reading at Master since 1243, the highest on the map after Awanui, and the Mwamba entry of 1186 beside it.

*Budget.* 6 TP at Master: Hard for four Masters; Deadly at level 9. 18 TP for an Adept party — not a fight; the Reading that says so is any of them, and the closure is what the lineage posted instead of a contract.

### 3.4 Guru — Waimotu reach, rising — Threnis 1244

**Waimotu reach, rising — Threnis 1244** — Guru tier, rising · base animal not recorded (the council: a keeper; the Namarite Tithe's shrine at Waimotu: the Sower's work; the Ledger's Puketai estimate: a reading) · Tropical Rainforest × Threnis: canopy predator emergence, at full expression · node off the Watch's scale at the Threnis 1244 turn, rising at Velquor 1245 · Reverie ground (Awanui; Tangata; Green Chimera).

*Watch entry (Appendix D form).* Threnis 1244. "Canopy over the Waimotu reach read past the scale at the turn. Keepers posted closure. Reading rising at Velquor." Place and tether: the forest reach above the river-island seat; the reach. Phase: Threnis, at the turn. Reading at rising: off the Watch's scale, as Frostvatn was. How displaced: not yet. Other record: the Waimotu council's closure, declared at the turn, renewed at Velquor, no figure given; the Tithe's shrine-keeper's letter to Qasr-Al-Rimal, unanswered.

*Status.* Rising; not risen as of 1 Velquor 1245. The GM decides whether and when it rises; the standing assessment of the Watch is that Frostvatn was the decade's largest expression and not its conclusion (Canon Part IX, The Present), and this is the module's candidate for the next. A campaign event; a season of play. If it never rises, the reach stays closed, the reading stays off the scale, and the entry stays an entry (Canon Appendix D, rule for episodes: a fifth entry may be added only as an entry).

*Domain, if it rises.* The reach: the rainforest above Waimotu from the seat's landing to the first falls, and the river through it. Standing conditions at Ground scale: **canopy predator emergence at full expression** — every emergence on the reach is one tier above its entry, to Master, and its Boss line rises with it; **the way closes** — at the end of each round, every square a creature moved through this round and is no longer adjacent to becomes canopy (a Wall, 2 high, 20 Vigor; Fire deals full, Physical half) unless a keeper walked it, and the Warden's *Read the Ground* returns the corridor that was not there and is; **healing beyond record** — every Vigor restoration by a Nature ability on the reach is doubled (the Saelura anomaly of 1218 made standing); **the register is louder** — a Novice Apothecarist pays 1 Strain at the start of each turn in which it Reads on the reach, and every *Read the Living* on the reach returns two sentences, the second precise. The seat is not in the Domain; the seat is where the Domain ends, and the households have moved their landing to the seaward side.

*Avatar, if it presents one.* The record does not say what it is; this treatment does not settle it. The manifestation is the canopy at the bend: **6×6 · Speed 0** (it is wherever the canopy is: at the start of a phase it may re-manifest at any point on the reach) · Tempo 3 · Guard 26 body / Ward 25 · Vigor 800 per manifestation · attack +14 · Interrupts 3 (a branch, 8). **Parts** (4; five pools of 160, the fifth the last pool):
- **The crown** (Guard 26, the body). *Canopy fall* · Action · Burst 3 at any point on the reach within 12 · 2d12+8 Physical (crush), Prone. *Emergence* · Action · once per phase · a canopy predator drops into a square adjacent to any enemy: one Master standard block (Vigor 60, Guard 20, attack +10, 2 × 10), lifted from a Novice of the reach.
- **Two root-reaches** (Guard 24 each). Each: two attacks per Action at reach 3, 2d8+2 Physical; a hit Grabs (escape: an Action, Frame or Poise vs 22). Destroying one removes its reach and its Grab.
- **The keeper's face** (Guard 28, the core). *The way closes* · Action · Ground · every path made this round closes now, and every enemy with no ally adjacent checks Poise DC 20 or is Rooted 1 round by roots. *Called home* · Interrupt ability · Burst 3 vs Ward · Frightened, and pulled 3 squares toward the bend.

Destroying a part removes its listed ability and grants whoever destroyed it a Reading of the tether; one attack damages one pool, an area one pool of the attacker's choice among those it covers, and damage past a pool's 0 is lost (GMG §6.5). **Manifestation destroyed:** it returns at the next Threnis phase, or at the next Firstday, at full, minus parts unseated. Killing it is a record of a body killed.

*Tether.* The reach's node: the bend of the river above the seat where the forest stands on both banks and the water runs slow. A Sorcerer's *Read Structure* at Guru grade returns its two editable values. It is not the seat and it is not the reef.

*Tether points.* Three, on the regional map (GB16). The record names two methods; the third is this file's and must be entered.
1. **The closure** (Chimera; a treaty that moves people). The council's closure of the reach held empty across two phase turns and renewed at each — the Marama method of 1091, which the Watch records as having worked and cannot say why. Nothing enters the reach, including the Tithe's collectors, who owe the way-toll and would pay it, the Ledger's estimators, and the party's own hunters; the keeping is the party's work, a season of scenes. Unseated: removes the crown's *Emergence* — there is no one on the reach for the canopy to hunt.
2. **The slow water** (engineering, or a Guru's sustained work). The bend's slow water is the anchor's hold. An Elementalist Guru's *Harbor Kept* holds the river fast through the bend across a phase, at the ability's holding cost; or a season's works cut a channel — which on Chimera ground is an Accord operation under no treaty, a plot and not a rule. Unseated: removes the root-reaches' Grab — the roots let go of what the water no longer holds.
3. **The bend's anchor** (the last; a Join at DC 30). At the bend, after 1 and 2: *Read the Living* at Guru grade (the reach entire, and what it needs, which is to be left) joined with *Read Structure* at Guru grade (the anchor's two values, and which to unseat); or *Read the Living* joined with *Read the Crossing* (every crossing on the reach since the turn, which is the account the keepers' closure is keeping). One roll, the higher contributor's, vs 30; 2 Strain each; once per encounter. The Domain collapses on the success. Nothing is killed.

*Reads as.* Sorcerer: the tether's coordinates — the bend. Elementalist: which moon it embodies — Threnis; what sustained work would hold it — the river held fast through the bend. Apostle: returns "the Debtor" — a doctrinal problem, not a target; the shrine-keeper's letter is this Reading, unanswered. Apothecarist: the avatar fails — not a living system; the reach, read at Ground scale, answers: what it needs is to be left (GB17). Necromancer: the crossing count at the node — every crossing on the reach since the turn. Warden: the Domain's edge — the landing's seaward side, and the first falls. Hexblade: the phase in which it is thinnest — Saelura or Orrivane, the far phases from Threnis, when its Interrupts are 2. Vanguard: which part has reach — the root-reaches, 3. Paladin: the part carrying the load — the keeper's face; break it first. Berserker: fails — the gate reads nothing above Master. Artificer: which tether point is load-bearing — the slow water. Warlock: fails — nothing to dose.

*Outcome line.* Tether. Domain collapsed: 1 named Guru relic — **Waimotu reach-root (Guru, named)** · Origin: Waimotu reach, rising — Threnis 1244 · Awanui · Guru · Threnis · Line: Tether · *Attribute:* Healing dealt, +1 RD per heal · *Alteration:* a bounded piece of Morphic Borrowing — **Borrowed reach** · Action · once per encounter · 2 rounds · your Strike or Core has reach 3 and a hit Grabs; an Apothecarist uses it at 4 Strain (GB18); anyone else only as a Push, 1 Mark, once per round (R3) · *Governor:* Tether — works on the reach, or for seven days after a Breather taken at the bend, or in the hands of its bonded holder · Seats in a Guru socket or the Trinket · Bond: the tether's — and 2 Master relics; the node reading falls one step and does not return to baseline. The first manifestation destroyed leaves 1 Master relic; a later one only if a tether point has been unseated since; the avatar returns. On Chimera ground the relic belongs to the ground, and the council's keeper decides; a Guru relic that leaves the reach is filed by the Ledger at Puketai the day it is seen (GMG §7.7).

*Records.* The council's closure. The Tithe's letter. The Ledger's estimate, which stops at the pilot's last mark. The Sedge oral record, asked, says the reach has always had a keeper and now it is awake, which the Ledger classifies as anecdotal and the pilots decline to comment on. Three accounts of one reading; the rule for episodes is that no one settles it (Canon XI.6, lunar embodiments vs gods).

*Budget.* Not a stand-up fight for anyone below Guru. A Guru party of four against one manifestation: 6 TP at Guru, and the fight is 3–4 rounds at full damage, 6–7 at the table, once a phase, for a season; the tether points are the arc and their cost ledger is the campaign.

## 4. Generating a beast

For a ground this file does not cover, a new phase, or a Chronicle v0.2 entry wanted at the Heroes table. The steps are the Generation Procedure (Canon Part VIII) as dice; every result is a candidate XI.3 row and goes in the session's ratification register.

### 4.1 Count, by ground and phase

| Tier | Roll | Condition |
|:--|:--|:--|
| Novice | 1d4 + 1 standing on any working ground; 1d3 new per phase | — |
| Adept | 1d3 standing; d6, 5–6 = one new per phase | Ceiling Adept or higher |
| Master | d6, 4–6 = one standing on the homeland; d12, 12 = one new per year | Ceiling Master; the Threnis phase on 8 in 12 |
| Guru | d4 once per map per campaign: 1 none; 2–3 one rising; 4 two | Off-scale reading; a campaign event; enter it as a Watch entry |

### 4.2 Moon at emergence

d5 (a d10 halved, rounded up): 1 Velquor, 2 Saelura, 3 Orrivane, 4 Namaris, 5 Threnis. Master tier: 1–8 on a d12 is Threnis; 9–12 the others in order. The moon fixes the column; read the cell; the cell is the beast's ambient effect and the source of its trait, dependency, arena, or domain. The moon is also the relic's moon, and the phase in which the school of its moon has Strain Capacity +2 (GMG §9.4).

### 4.3 Base animal

The fauna of the ground. These are examples of what lives there, not species of beast; any animal of the biome and the culture's daily life serves, and the mounts and draft animals of Canon Part I are fauna too. The animal sets Size and Speed on the Boss line (§2.1); it never sets Vigor or Guard.

| Biome | Fauna of the ground (examples) |
|:--|:--|
| Tundra | musk ox, reindeer, arctic fox, hare, ptarmigan, raven, seal on the coast |
| Taiga | wolf, boar, lynx, bear, elk, beaver, marten, owl, dhole in Renlei country |
| Evergreen | bear, leopard or tiger in Renlei country, boar, deer, macaque, heron on the coast |
| Deciduous forest | deer, jaguar or ocelot in Yamana country, leopard in Unsaan country, bat, hornet, boar, porcupine |
| Grassland | horse, wild ass, buffalo, gazelle, hawk, eagle, vole, gopher, turkey, peccary |
| Savanna | cattle, lion, hyena, jackal, wildebeest, oryx, ostrich, termite |
| Desert | camel, jackal, viper, scorpion, monitor, ibex, coyote, armadillo, vulture, falcon |
| Chaparral | puma, leopard, python, rattlesnake, goat, quail |
| Tropical rainforest | pig, eel, crab, flying fox, moth, mosquito, heron, harrier on the grassland edge, shark and otter on the water |

### 4.4 Prompts by tier

Roll d6 or choose. Each prompt is written as the Heroes procedure wants it.

**Novice — the Pattern.**

| d6 | Trait (the big turn's rider) | Rigidity (the cycle's fixed element) | Tell |
|:-:|:--|:--|:--|
| 1 | Speed: Speed 10 and Dash as its Interrupt | A route: it moves along one line and turns back at its end | The route's far end goes quiet the turn before |
| 2 | Concealment in the cell: Hidden while in it, Advantage from Hidden | An hour: it hunts at one time and leaves at the bell | The sign appears (lights, glare, dust) the turn before |
| 3 | Regenerating 5 on the recover turn | A target: the last, the loudest, the light | It turns toward the target and stops, one turn early |
| 4 | A bite or horn one step up (2d6+3) | A return: the same tree, step, skerry | It looks back at the return the turn before it goes |
| 5 | Footing: never Rooted or Prone by ground; ignores the cell's hazard | A refusal: it will not leave, cross, or pursue past a line | It halts at the line, one turn early |
| 6 | Numbers: a band as its Mob (§2.6) | A following: one animal leads and the rest go where it went | The leader moves first, one turn early |

**Adept — the Dependency.**

| d6 | Site (and the Reading that names it) | Enhancement: one ability | Enhancement: one resistance |
|:-:|:--|:--|:--|
| 1 | A spring or waterhole (*Read the Answer*) | A cell as Burst 2 around it (smoke, storm, drift, fire) | The cell's kind (Fire, Frost, Storm, Stone) |
| 2 | A den, roost, or nest whose reading is off (*Read Structure*) | Regenerating 4 while at the site | Physical |
| 3 | A stand, a lick, a bush, a run (*Read the Living*) | A Frightening display: Burst 3 vs Ward, Frightened 2 rounds | Toxin |
| 4 | A carcass ground or dead-ground (*Read the Crossing*) | Agitation: allied Mobs and mounts rout on a failed check | Necrotic |
| 5 | A crust, bar, or outcrop (*Read Structure*) | Disorientation: a Burst 3 in which every Move ends one square off, vs Ward | Stone |
| 6 | A fire line or peat bed (*Read the Answer*) | Rot, venom, or sickness: Poisoned 2 on a bite | Force |

**Master — the arena.** The condition is the cell at strength wherever the beast is: write it as one benefit to the beast (+1 Interrupt and a resistance are fixed; add concealment, a movement mode, or the ambush round as the cell gives it) and one hazard on the party from GMG §9.3's cell line. The inversion is the cell's opposite phase — Saelura for most, Namaris for a chaparral or grassland cover, Velquor for a herd-beast — and the Vulnerable kind is the resistance's. The reversal is the operation that produces the inversion on purpose — a burn, a flood, a well, a closure — prepared in play, with three points on the map for the fight's 3-2-1 task, each a DC 18 check or a structure of 15–40 Vigor. Write the four phases from the operation's cost: what the beast takes back at each.

**Guru — the Domain.** Write the Watch entry first and the rules second. The Domain is a Ground; its standing conditions are the cell at full expression plus the three of §2.5. The avatar is 3–5 parts from the terrain the tether is (a shelf, a reach, a crown, a face), its 800 in parts + 1 equal pools — one per part and the last pool — at Guard 26 for the body, 24 for a limb, 28 for a core (§2.5), one ability per part. The tether is a terrain feature's node, never the body. The three tether points: one from the record's method (closure or engineering), one from the other, and the last a Join at DC 30 at the anchor. A Guru is a season; its cost ledger is the arc.

### 4.5 Records

Every beast has two counts. Roll d6 for the second counter: 1 a parish or precinct roll; 2 a Ledger licence or assessment; 3 a Concord docket or a keeper's closure; 4 a caravan house, timber house, or fish-house ledger; 5 a moot, council, or lineage count; 6 the Watch's phase entry, which is a reading and not a sighting. The first count is the ground's institution's, and in Heroes it is the contract (GMG §8.2).

### 4.6 Converting a Chronicle v0.2 entry

The 67 entries not converted here, and any beast written for Chronicle later, come across by this table. The designation, the five XI.3 fields, *Ecology*, and *Records* are carried unchanged; everything else is replaced, not translated line by line. Where a Chronicle line has no Heroes equivalent (the numbers rule; full Vigor regained each turn), it is dropped and the Heroes procedure covers it.

| Chronicle v0.2 line | Heroes line | How |
|:--|:--|:--|
| *Block* (Guard, Vigor, attack, damage, Move; size adjustment) | *Boss block* (§2.1) | Take the tier's Boss line whole. Size from the animal (small → Medium; Large → Large; "a size the ground has no record of" → Huge). Speed = Move × ¾ to an even number, 6–10; flight and swimming as written. Split the damage budget into the animal's attacks |
| Novice *Amplified trait* | *Trait*: the big turn's rider, or a passive | Rewrite the effect in PG terms (Favor → Advantage; Stuck → Rooted; a check at 13 → DC 13) |
| Novice *Rigidity* | *Pattern*: the cycle of 2–4 turns and the tell | The Rigidity is the cycle's fixed element; write three turns around it unless the Rigidity wants two or four (§2.2); the sign in *Ecology* is the tell |
| Novice *Exploit* | *Exploit* (Advantage, Guard −4 on the recover turn) and *Hunt's end* | The Chronicle's cost in time or work is the hunt's end; the mechanical exploit is the GMG's |
| Adept *Enhancement* | *Enhancement*: one ability + one resistance | The Chronicle's effect becomes the ability in PG format (Burst 2–3, vs Ward); pick the resistance from the cell (§4.4) |
| Adept *Dependency* (found by a layer at Adept grade) | *Dependency*: a site with a 30-Vigor object; found by the class Reading that replaces the layer | Life → *Read the Living*; Structure → *Read Structure*; Element → *Read the Answer*; Boundary → *Read the Crossing*. Field lines → the martial Readings (GMG §6.4) |
| Adept *Disruption* (a technique at 16, or plain work) | *Deny it*: two Actions + DC 16, or break the object; downtime route kept | The plain route is the downtime route (§2.3) |
| Adept *After* (Novice block, trait kept) | Phases 2 and 3 (§2.3) | The kept trait becomes what the beast has at the site in Phase 2 |
| Master *Dominance* (Favor, Guard +2, regain, numbers rule, the cell on the ground) | *Arena*: +1 Interrupt, one resistance, a hazard on the party; concealment or the ambush round where the cell is an ambush | Guard +2 is already the Boss role's; regain and the numbers rule are dropped — Vigor 450 and Interrupts are the Heroes equivalent |
| Master *Energy inversion* | *Inversion*: the Vulnerable kind and the window's conditions | The Vulnerable kind is the resistance's |
| Master *Reversal* (a phase-scale operation, identified at 22, a last act) | *Reversal*: the operation prepared in play; the fight's 3-2-1 task; window 2 rounds | Three points on the map; the identification Readings are the Master column of GMG §6.4; the Join stands |
| Master *After* (Master block, killable) | Phase 4 (§2.4) | Damage ×1.25; window permanent |
| Guru *Domain* (Ground conditions; Environmental Strain; grade shift; tier lift) | *Domain* (§2.5): the cell's conditions in PG terms + the three fixed ones | Environmental Strain → 1 Strain; one grade more → two sentences; Master tier inside → one tier up, to Master |
| Guru *No block* (a body as a Master block in Dominance) | *Avatar* (§2.5; GMG §6.5): parts and pools, Boss Guard 26 / 24 / 28, 800 per manifestation, returns | The Chronicle had no parts; write 3–5 from the tether's terrain |
| Guru *Tether* | *Tether* — unchanged | *Read Structure* at Guru grade returns the two values |
| Guru *Displacement* (engineering or closure, ending in a Join at 30) | *Tether points*: three; the record's method, the other method, and the Join at DC 30 last | The Join is unchanged; the two methods become points 1 and 2 |
| *Layers* | *Reads as* | One line per class, in the shape of GMG §6.4's column for the tier; "nothing here" stays a true return |
| Relic (Chronicle row 22) | *Outcome line* (§2.7) | GMG §6.6 and the §7.5 catalogue; one relic written in the §7.9 form |
| Lines at Squad scale | Mobs at the tier's drill (§2.6) | Cohesion per member 6 / 9 / 12; sliding block |
| Encounter calibration (platoon standard) | *Budget* in TP (§2.6) | 6 TP at tier; ±1 rank rule |

## 5. Register — for ratification

Choices in this module that touch canon, the GMG, or the Chronicle module, listed in the pattern of GMG §13. Rejecting a row changes what it names and nothing else. Every beast entry is a candidate XI.3 row; none is entered.

| # | Decision | Canon / GMG support | Where | Note |
|:-:|:--|:--|:--|:--|
| GB1 | R.8 "Full bestiary" is read as forbidding species lists and not registers of emergences; this module's entries are emergences in XI.3 form (Chronicle row 1 carried) | R.8; XI.3 | Front matter; §3 | The reading that permits the module. If rejected, the four entries stand as worked examples of the Generation Procedure only |
| GB2 | Beasts run on the GMG's Boss line by tier (Guard/Ward +2, Vigor 60/110/450/800, budget 16/32/55/90, Tempo and Interrupts by tier); the Chronicle's beast blocks are retired for Heroes; beasts carry no Strain or Marks | GMG §4.2–4.4, §6.3 | §2.1 | Replaces Chronicle row 2. The base animal sets Size, Speed, and mode only |
| GB3 | Ethos expressed as the record — how the ground's institution files and handles a beast — and not as a change to the body; in Heroes the record is also the contract (Chronicle row 3 carried) | Part VIII worked example; GMG §8 | §1.1 | Rejecting this leaves ethos unexpressed, as canon leaves it |
| GB4 | Twelve node ceilings as the Watch's Velquor 1245 ledger, each with a second record; Zand-Kala dormant; Frostvatn's basin excluded (Chronicle row 4 carried) | Part I; Part IX; XI.5 item 17 | §3.0 | Attested readings used where canon has them; the rest are the module's. Numbers are records (Canon Discipline 5) |
| GB5 | A Novice pattern is read by any Reading, by two cycles watched, **or by a record in the party's hands** — the third route is the Chronicle's and is added to GMG §6.3's two | Part VIII (pattern exploitation); Canon Discipline 5 | §2.2 | Reads "pattern exploitation" as including the paper. Rejecting it leaves the GMG's two routes |
| GB6 | An Adept Dependency denied in downtime before the fight (the Chronicle's plain route) removes the resistance and ability from the first round; the beast still goes to the site at half Vigor | Part VIII (substrate disruption); GMG §6.3 | §2.3 | GMG §6.3 prices the in-fight denial only. Rejecting this makes downtime denial the same as in-fight denial with no first-round effect |
| GB7 | Where the cell is an ambush, the Master arena includes the **ambush round** (the beast acts first from Hidden in round 1; *The Unclosing Eye* excepted) and concealment as the arena's benefit; the resistance is the cover's (Physical at Kwazira) | Chaparral × Threnis, Mountain × Threnis (Part VIII); PG §14.8 (*The Unclosing Eye*: immune to surprise) | §2.4, §3.3 | The Chronicle's "every creature is Surprised" converted. Rejecting the ambush round leaves Hidden and the Initiative roll |
| GB8 | The Chronicle's phase-scale Reversal operation is kept as preparation in play (rights, works, dockets, Marks) and the GMG's 3-2-1 map task is its last act | Part VIII (environmental reversal); Part IX (Shalei 1156; Mwamba 1188, "across a full phase turn"); GMG §6.3 | §2.4 | Neither file contradicted; the operation prices the fight's three points |
| GB9 | A Master beast left on its ground is at full Vigor and in Phase 1 at the next phase turn; inside a phase it keeps its wounds; it never leaves its ground | Part VIII (environmental dominance); GMG §10.5 (a Boss's arena condition ends only by the phase procedure) | §2.4 | The Chronicle's "regains all Vigor each turn" and "withdraws at a quarter" both dropped; this is the residue of them. Rejecting it makes an abandoned Master fight resumable at its wounds |
| GB10 | Three fixed Domain conditions in Heroes terms: a Novice of the moon's school pays 1 Strain per turn Reading inside; that school's Readings return two sentences inside; lesser emergences inside are one tier up, to Master | Part VIII (lunar embodiment; the node ceiling — a Domain is an off-scale reading); GMG §6.1 | §2.5 | The Chronicle's Environmental Strain, grade shift, and tier lift converted. Heroes has no Environmental Strain rule; 1 Strain is the smallest cost the PG has |
| GB11 | The third tether point is always the last and always a Join at DC 30 at the anchor; the record's two methods are points 1 and 2; no single school displaces a Guru tier | PG §2 (30: "reachable only by a Join"); GMG §6.3 (a joint operation as a tether-point action); Part I (Frostvatn: three Gurus' Marks) | §2.5, §3.4 | Reads GMG §6.3's "joint operation" as the Chronicle's Join at 30. Rejecting it leaves three points of any Guru-scale kind |
| GB12 | Numbers emergences run as Mobs in sliding blocks at the drill of the beast's tier, Cohesion 6/9/12 per member; a leader is the Boss and the numbers its Mob; a leaderless swarm is the whole beast and takes the tier's procedure | GMG §5 (D6: sliding block for animals; drill is discipline, not member rank); §11.4 (Ulvskov pack) | §2.6 | The Chronicle ran every Line at Squad scale, Novice figures. Rejecting the drill-by-tier line leaves every beast Mob at Novice drill |
| GB13 | Four entries kept, one per rank, chosen for institution spread (Crown, Accord, Chimera ×2) and homeland spread; the other 67 Chronicle entries are not converted and convert on demand by §4.6 | — | §3, §4.6 | Joe's brief for this file. The two Master and one Guru entries of the roll are the only ones at those tiers; the Puketai fire-harrier (Master, Namaris) is the one Master not converted |
| GB14 | Drowned ground (Taiga × Velquor) as a hazard square: difficult terrain; end a turn on it, Frame DC 13 or Rooted until a Move is spent | Part VIII (bog-light; drowned ground); PG §6.4 (hazard squares); GMG §9.3 (cells as table mechanics; G22) | §3.1 | A new cell mechanic in the pattern of GMG §9.3's table; the Chronicle's Stuck at 13. May be revised without touching the pattern |
| GB15 | Kwazira's Reversal executed under Tangata fire law with burn rights lent by Rangitahu lineages of Koremu, docketed at the Concord; the drove-line lineages downwind object (Chronicle row 20 carried) | Part V (fire law: lent, never sold; the Concord's smoke item) | §3.3 | No new law is added; the objection is the docket's |
| GB16 | The Waimotu avatar as a 6×6 canopy manifestation of four parts (crown, two root-reaches, the keeper's face) with Speed 0 and re-manifestation on the reach; three tether points — the closure, the slow water, the bend's Join — with the third as this file's invention | GMG §6.5 (avatar guidance); §6.3; Appendix D (fifth entry only as an entry); Chronicle row 11 (the rising, the tether at the bend, the shrine) | §3.4 | The Chronicle entry had no parts and two methods. The avatar does not settle what the reach is (the council: a keeper; the Tithe: the Sower's work; the Ledger: a reading); XI.6, lunar embodiments vs gods |
| GB17 | The Apothecarist's Guru-tier Reading at Waimotu fails against the avatar and answers for the Domain read at Ground scale (what the reach needs); the Join at the bend uses it | GMG §6.4 (Apothecarist at Guru: fails — G8, open); Part II (Nature Guru: the ground answers; Chronicle: Life at 22 in the displacement Join) | §3.4 | A Threnis embodiment read by the Threnis school. Depends on G8; if G8 is ratified as a flat failure, the Join at the bend is Structure and Boundary only |
| GB18 | Four relics written in the GMG §7.9 form (crust-print, spring-stone and tooth, coil-scale, reach-root); the Guru alteration *Borrowed reach* at 4 Strain for an Apothecarist | GMG §7.5 (catalogue; a Guru alteration as a bounded piece of the moon's Guru ability — Morphic Borrowing); R3; R4 (never cheaper than the school's own ability for the same work) | §3.1–3.4 | The 4-Strain figure is below *Command the Ground*'s 5 because the work is one target, not Burst 4; if R4 is read as the whole ability's cost, 5 |
| GB19 | Speed conversion: Chronicle Move × ¾ to an even number, 6–10; Size from the animal; damage budget split by the animal's attacks | GMG §4.2 ("dice are optional; the flat figure is the calibration"); PG §4 (Speed 6) | Front matter; §2.1; §4.6 | Mechanical; no canon |
| GB20 | The §4.4 prompts rewritten as Heroes procedures (cycle and tell; site, ability, resistance; arena, inversion, task; domain, parts, points); the Chronicle's d6 tables retired for Heroes | Part VIII (Generation Procedure); GMG §6.3 | §4.4 | Same canon, same dice; the columns are the Heroes procedure's |
| GB21 | Emergence dates are dates of record, 1243–1244, with the present at 1 Velquor 1245; the Waimotu rising is dated to the Threnis 1244 turn; episode beasts entered from the episode files take precedence over any row here that shares a ground (Chronicle rows 16–17 carried) | XI.3 note; R.8 | Front matter; §3 | Nothing is dated after the canon present |
| GB22 | Beast entries on Crown ground draw on Part VII only as record and friction; no god is named as acting; the Skarfell entry does not settle the parish/household split (Chronicle row 18 carried) | XI.5 items 11 and 18; XI.6 | §3.1 | The sacrist "calls it nothing" |
| GB23 | The avatar's 800 as parts + 1 equal pools with the last pool opened only when every part is destroyed; one attack, one pool; overflow lost; an area damages one pool and hexes every part it covers; once per phase is once per manifestation | GMG §6.5, §4.4, §10.4 (G47, G48); Part I ("could not be killed") | §2.5, §3.4 | New in v0.2. Counted per covered part, an area did five times its damage to a four-part avatar (GMG §12.3 b, f). Same reading as the GMG; rejecting it here re-opens the GMG rows |
| GB24 | The avatar's Guard is the Boss line's: body 26, limb 24, core 28; Waimotu's crown 24 → 26, root-reaches 22 → 24, keeper's face 26 → 28 | GMG §4.3, §6.5, §12.3 c (G49) | §2.1, §2.5, §3.4, §4.6 | New in v0.2. v0.1's §2.1 row was the one Boss line with the role's +2 on Ward and not on Guard. Alternative: keep 24 / 22 / 26 and raise Vigor to 950 |
| GB25 | The per-manifestation Master relic: the first destruction leaves one; a later one only after a tether point has been unseated since the last relic left | GMG §6.6, §12.3 p (G50); XI.3 (relics as emergence residue) | §2.7, §3.4 | New in v0.2. Closes the relic farm a 2-round manifestation kill would open. Alternative: one per manifestation per moon-cycle |
| GB26 | Executing the vulnerability logic is what the advancement rules count as a structural resolution: 2 Proofs (1 by attrition), and the rank gate for the beast's tier | Part VIII, tier table (vulnerability logic is the fight's structure) | §2.7; PG §13.4–13.5 (H74, H76); GMG §9.1 (G56) | The distinction already drawn by the outcome columns; nothing in the beast entries changes |
| GB27 | A Novice cycle runs 2–4 turns, 3 by default; the entry states its length; the Phase 2 change may be the cycle's order or its length; the four §3 entries keep their cycles | Part VIII, tier table (pattern exploitation); GMG §6.3 (G66) | §2.2, §4.6 | New in v0.4. 2 is the floor: the exploit lands on the recover turn, so a 2-turn cycle opens it every other round and a 1-turn cycle would be a permanent window. §4.4's prompt table gains no row. Alternative: keep 3 |
| GB28 | A Dependency may be a moving site — a herd, a tide-line, a dragged carcass, a shifting roost: the site is the square or block it occupies at the start of each round; the object is the thing itself (a Mob's Cohesion, a lead animal's Vigor); the check route stands wherever it is; Phase 2 sends the beast to wherever the site is now | Part VIII, tier table (biological dependency; substrate disruption); GMG §6.3 (G67) | §2.3 | New in v0.4. The check route means a party is never required to break a Mob to deny a Dependency. No §3 entry uses it. Alternative: sites are fixed |

**Cross-file dependencies.** GMG G8 (Guru-beast Reading failures) governs GB17. GMG §13.3's open item — enter §11.4's Ulvskov pack, and any emergence a campaign adds, in the Grand Beasts register — lands here: the Ulvskov pack is not entered by this file either, and the Chronicle v0.2 register (rows 1–22) remains the register of record for the 67 unconverted entries until each is converted or withdrawn.

**Context-size note.** This module is about 14,000 words (roughly 21k tokens). The routine beast load for a Heroes session is §2 plus the entry the session is running (about 3,000 words), with GMG §6 open beside it. The full file is for a session that generates new grounds, converts Chronicle entries, or ratifies rows; that session should load this file, GMG §6 and §7, PG §2–8, and Canon Part VIII only, and not the Chronicle module whole — Chronicle v0.2 is 34k tokens on its own, and §4.6 needs one entry from it at a time.
