Magic Mechanics
Tier progression, cost accumulation, cooldown signatures, the Elemental Master technique, the amplifier system, substrate dynamics under surge, and the Machine's five-frequency lattice.
Tier Progression
Four phases of mastery apply to all recognized schools. Tier progression is irreversible — there is no reset, no detier, no grace period. Each tier permanently accumulates cost on the same meter. Most professional casters operate at Adept for their entire careers. Master and Guru practitioners are rare, institutionally significant, and sometimes classified.
| Tier | Capability Expansion | Cost Acceleration | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novice | Perception access | Low | No |
| Adept | Directed manipulation | Moderate | No |
| Master | Environmental influence | High | No |
| Guru | Structural reality alteration | Extreme | No |
Cooldown System
Every spell requires a cooldown — a recovery interval before the spell can be used again. Minor abilities recover in seconds. Powerful spells require hours or longer. Cooldown costs are the micro-unit of the cost accumulation tables: each cooldown is one tick on the same irreversible meter. The long-run accumulation is what kills practitioners, not any single use.
| School | Cooldown Cost Signature |
|---|---|
| Arcane | Neurological — sensory confusion, temporal dissociation |
| Elemental | Exhaustion — physical depletion proportional to output |
| Divine (Restoration) | Vitality transfer — the caster's biological timeline shortens |
| Divine (Necrotic) | Boundary erosion — proximity to death accumulates |
| Psionic | Cognitive degradation — confusion, disorientation, certainty erosion |
| Nature | Physical damage — the body absorbs what the living system carried |
Elemental Master Tier
The canonical Master-tier Elemental technique establishes how the tier boundary works and how institutions build around capability concentration. Master-tier practice operates three exploit layers simultaneously. Adept-tier practitioners operate single-layer. This is the tier boundary — the distinction between performing at higher volume versus performing at higher complexity.
Three-Layer Technique
The layers engage in fixed sequence. Thermal — ambient temperature manipulation around the target. The most precision-demanding layer. Heat wants to move; containing a four-degree differential at a one-metre radius for ten seconds requires continuous attention, and the attention is the cost. A diffuse boundary indicates thermal bleed. Magnetic — alignment of ferrous content in the target material. The load is physical — tendons taut, cost accumulating across exercises. Atmospheric — air pressure differential providing lift coefficient the magnetic layer cannot supply alone. The lightest layer; requires less conscious direction.
A single Master practitioner's three-layer output matches a formation's. This capability concentration creates the institutional response — the capability creates the committee, the committee creates the deployment framework, the framework creates the formation geometry.
Precision Metrics
| Metric | Method |
|---|---|
| Delay (initiation to engagement) | Timed per exercise. Benchmark: 0.50s |
| Symmetry grade | Scorch pattern radius at four cardinal points. Tolerance: ±2% |
| Sustained activation duration | Breathing rate differential (resting 12/min, post-activation 17/min) |
| Thermal boundary sharpness | Visual — sharp = contained, diffuse = bleed |
| Dust on set-down | Binary. Dust = imprecision |
The notation grid is transparent — it receives everything it can hold. What it cannot hold is invisible. This is how instrumental measurement becomes ideology: the grid is the instrument; the instrument is precise; the precision has edges. The gap between the grid's categories and whatever the grid would need to describe next is small and unnoticed.
The Amplifier System
The mechanism through which a committee scales a Master-tier technique from one practitioner to a formation of twenty-three. The central technology of the institutional plot.
Physical Properties
Dark metal casing — the surface does not reflect light. Weight concentrated at centre, as though compressed. The surface is cold, colder than ambient temperature, and does not reach thermal equilibrium. Cylindrical, open at one end, with a locking collar matching the mounting bracket on a standard glaive shaft. The collar's threading matches Rationalist glaive specifications precisely — a coordination between Devout and Rationalist institutions that their public correspondence does not acknowledge.
The Draw
The amplifier absorbs the operator's Elemental output continuously while contact is maintained. The absorption is the channelling mechanism — it extends output by consuming it. The briefing describes the extension. The briefing does not describe the draw. The extension and the draw are the same mechanism.
| Layer | Draw Rate (vs ambient) | Recovery (Master-tier) |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal (active) | 3× ambient | 12 seconds |
| Magnetic (active) | 2× ambient | 16 seconds |
| Atmospheric | Negligible | Negligible |
| Ambient (passive contact) | 40% reduction in 30 seconds | 8 seconds |
The amplifier draws in proportion to what the operator produces — the operator with the highest attunement loses the most. The instrument consumes the best operator first. Recovery data from the first sustained activation exercise (15 minutes): attunement 2.8 recovered in 14 minutes; attunement 3.1 recovered in 26 minutes with sub-tremor vibration and cold sensation in the hands. The training manual's recovery intervals were derived from one body. The operators' bodies are categorically different instruments.
Crucible-Class Deployment
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Formation | 23 operators, perimeter array, 15-pace spacing |
| Layer | Thermal only (single-layer through amplifier) |
| Effect | Continuous containment corridor |
| Minimum attunement | 2.8 |
| Sustained activation | 45 minutes per cycle |
| Recovery interval | Not specified |
Protocol specifies 45-minute sustained activation. Recovery after 15 minutes ranges from 14 to 26 minutes. If scaling is linear: 42–78 minutes recovery per cycle. If exponential: unknown. The data does not yet exist. The data will be produced by the bodies of the soldiers in the formation.
Nature Fractions Technique
Developed at Master tier, adapted for Novice practitioners. Widens existing channels by fractions so small the body cannot distinguish the intervention from its own adaptation. The ceiling is 60% stabilization — consistent across sites, across healers, across node output levels from 3.0 to 7.0. The ceiling is not a failure but a parameter. The bridge holds what it was designed to hold.
Above node output 7.0, the ceiling drifts: 58% at 5.4, 55% at 9.1. The drift is directional. As output increases, fractions must be smaller; smaller fractions take longer; longer fractions mean fewer patients per day; fewer patients per day means the ones at the end of the queue wait. The waiting is the cost.
| Property | Fractions (Novice) | Integration (Master) |
|---|---|---|
| Channel reading | Presence / absence | Architecture — depth, substrate, body's assessment |
| Intervention | Widen incrementally | Widen past stabilization into permanence |
| Body's response | Tolerance (passive) | Acceptance (the body claims the architecture) |
| Failure mode | Channel narrows through correction | Acceptance reverses — collapse past starting point |
| Ceiling | 60% | Higher, but requires the perception |
| Transferability | Trainable | Not transmittable. The perception lives in the hands |
When integration is attempted without Master-tier perception, acceptance may hold briefly — seconds — then reverse. The channels collapse past the starting point: worse than before the attempt. The fractions technique is insufficient for high-grade surge. The integration requires a perception that cannot be taught.
Substrate Dynamics Under Node Surge
The tissue holding channels erodes under elevated node output. The channel is intact. What holds the channel is eroding — the way soil thins over a root when the ground beneath subsides. Surface channels degrade under surge. Deep channels — protected by core depth — hold. Surface architecture is the vulnerability.
| Rate | Conditions |
|---|---|
| 2-day baseline | Normal node output (below 5.0) |
| 2-hour equivalent | During surge at 6.2+ |
| Acute dissolution | Surge past 9.1 — substrate dissolves entirely |
Before a surge, grade-2 contamination sits below the safety threshold. The surge pushes the field past grade-2 calibration. The baseline that defined safety moves. The movement kills a patient whose channels were assessed as stable fourteen days earlier. The grade-2 classification was correct when it was made. The surge rendered the classification lethal. The triage system is not wrong. The triage system is calibrated to a baseline that no longer exists.
The Machine
Ancient technology — not magical in the conventional sense, but built to manipulate magical signatures on a continental scale. Its network of channels carved through bedrock carries dual-signature energy between the 47 known nodes. The central crisis involves contamination carrying both Nature and Divine signatures simultaneously. This should be impossible — individuals attune to one school only. Two signatures in the same body, stone, or groundwater implies a mechanism capable of merging what biology and theology agree cannot be merged.
What it does to the living: Offers integration — merging a body's single-school signature with a complementary signature, producing a dual-attunement the body was never designed to sustain. The process feels like liberation. It is consumption.
What it does to the dead: Incorporates them. Forensic readings reveal the dead inside the Machine's field are not at rest — they are operational. Residual psychic energy powers the outer rings.
The Machine does not distinguish between healing and consumption. Neither do any of the institutions built to manage it.
Perception by School
Each school perceives the Machine differently. This structural limitation prevents any single institution from understanding the full picture. Perceptual fragmentation is not accidental — it is why the crisis persists.
| School | What It Perceives |
|---|---|
| Arcane | Mathematical structure — rings, equations, unified field. System of cause and effect |
| Nature | Dual signature as body-level experience — two forces fighting, a channel that could hold both. The offer is real. The cost is real |
| Divine (Necrotic) | The dead — their accumulation, transformation, the clean boundary edge dissolved |
| Psionic | Consciousness and emotional state. Can sweep for living minds but cannot perceive the dead or the deeper architecture |
| Elemental | Environmental effects — contamination in groundwater, spiral burns, geological disruption — but not the mechanism producing them |
The Five-Frequency Lattice
The terminal chapter reveals the substrate's designed architecture — the deepest cosmological revelation in the series. The substrate contains distinct geometric channels for each of the five schools. The lattice was designed to hold five frequencies. The five frequencies correspond to the five schools. The lattice does not discriminate by school because the lattice was designed to hold all five.
Elemental integration seats into the lattice's Elemental channel — structurally identical to Nature-school integrations documented in earlier patients. The Machine's 47-node network is the distribution system for a substrate designed to integrate all five schools simultaneously.
The schools' separation — the single-attunement rule, the one-moon-per-school binding — is a limitation of the body, not of the system. The system was built for a body that does not yet exist. The Machine does not distinguish between healing and consumption because it was not designed for either. It was designed for integration.
Each prior transformation modifies the system. Later transformations accelerate because the lattice has been primed. Scaffolds designed to contain become mediations. Containment logic becomes integration logic. The story shifts from "contain or stop" to "hold and witness." Consent — the body's willingness to accept the architecture rather than resist it — becomes the only differentiator between dissolution and integration.
